"Sunset on the Tyne" is an original release from Geordie songstress Anna Reay & Deon Krishnan (the South African-Geordie!). The song is dedicated to those running the Great North Run 2017 and all proceeds are being donated to Prostate Cancer UK.
“All the stories behind the reasons people are running really inspired me to write the lyrics for this new song. I travel away a lot singing on cruise ships and the wonderful feeling I get when returning home to the North East… Well, let's just say it is definitely worth writing about! I think anyone who has lived in or visited the North East could relate to 'Sunset on the Tyne'.” (Anna Reay, August 2017)
Anna Reay and Deon Krishnan (bass player in the band and guitarist from their duo) have been writing original songs and will be launching their original album at Anna’s next show "Great Ladies of Song" at Gala Theatre, Durham on 17th September 2017. The performance takes place just one week after the Great North Run!

Anna and Deon were joined in the recording studio by other band members Stu Haikney (drums), also the drummer in the Peatbog Faeries - one of Scotland's best-known names in Contemporary Folk, and Steve Whitfield (keyboards), previously Musical Director for The Drifters, Matt Munroe, The Supremes and many more.
Also featuring two local treasures. Esteemed violinist Peter Tickell (fiddle) has just finished touring with our very own Geordie legend Sting and is due to start another tour with Birdie. The band also welcomed the Deputy Northumbrian Piper for His Grace the Duke of Northumberland, Andrew Davison. Andrew’s pipes were made on the banks of the Tyne by one of the best makers of all time.
Andrew says: “They are a really important set of Northumbrian Pipes historically, being one of the first ever made to be able to play two fully chromatic octaves, a design invented by Robert Reid and not improved upon to this day. Many say these pipes should be in a museum but, when the previous owner, the great piper Bill Stafford, died, his family interviewed all those who were interested in the instrument and it was a condition of me being allowed to buy them that I should play them – as the maker intended – and it always gives me enormous pleasure to honour that promise. I am sure that Robert Reid saw many sunsets over the Tyne and that both he and all previous owners of these pipes would be delighted to hear them.”

Anna's life-long friend lost her dad last year. He was diagnosed with early stages of Prostate Cancer in 2008 and received regular treatment since then to help him. In October 2015 he collapsed as a result of a tumour on his spine which was linked to his prostate cancer and unfortunately he wasn't able to walk following that.
Anna was shocked to see him deteriorate so quickly. He was a family man and although he was in a lot of pain and discomfort he didn't like others seeing him in that way.
John lost his battle on 7 September 2016 so Anna is marking the first anniversary of his passing away by raising as much money as she can for Prostate Cancer UK to help other amazing men like him and raise awareness of the fantastic work this charity does.
"Sunset on the Tyne" is about the Great North Run, family and the love of the North East. Proceeds to Prostate Cancer U.K.
